4 Beverages That Boost Your Heart Health

Exercise, eating well and skipping out on things like smoking and excessive drinking help keep your heart healthy, but what you may not realize is there are a number of beverages you can sip that will give the vital organ an added boost. Four drinks specifically can help lower your risk of heart disease, reduce plaque buildup and offer other potentially life-saving benefits.

Coffee

Whether it’s just part of your morning routine or a necessary perk to wake your mind, coffee also offers heart benefits. A collection of 36 studies released in Circulation, a scientific journal published for The American Heart Association, concluded that those who drank three to five cups of coffee each day has a significantly lower risk of heart disease. Coffee drinking in moderate amounts – roughly four cups a day – is also proven to lower the risk of heart failure and stroke.

While the caffeinated beverage has its advantages, as with many things in life, it’s to be enjoyed in moderation. Beyond the recommended moderate intake – three to five cups daily – you may start to feel jittery or suffer from the caffeine burn out. Too much coffee can also keep you up at night as caffeine typically stay in the body for 4-6 hours, so an afternoon cup of joe may mean a restless night.

A cup of coffee is considered 8 ounces and you’ll want to keep it heart healthy by skipping the full fat creamers and sugars.

Red Wine

Studies in the past few years have pointed to a light alcohol intake decreasing your likelihood of heart disease, but it needs to be the right alcohol – a sugary mixed beverage will not do you any health favors.

Researchers have concluded that the compounds in red wine, also called polyphenols, could improve circulations and reduce inflammation.

As with coffee, the red wine should be enjoyed in moderation. Research suggests no more than one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. How much is considered “one drink” when it comes to alcohol?

  • 12 ounces beer
  • 4 ounces of wine
  • 5 ounces of 80-proof liquor
  • 1 ounce of 100-proof liquor

Men age 65 and older should limit their alcohol to just one drink a day. As we age, our bodies change, limiting our ability to metabolize alcohol.

Tea

Tea is not only a perfect beverage to sip in the mornings or afternoons, but the benefits of green or black tea are good news for your heart.

These two types of tea offer compounds that are part of flavonoids, which are believed to help reduce inflammation and could ultimately help cut plaque that builds up inside the arteries.

Avoid the cream and sugar to keep you tea a zero calories beverage and enjoy it hot or iced. Keep in mind that most green and black teas do have a moderate amount of caffeine – about half of what you’ll find in coffee. Stick with three cups or less each day.

Grape Juice Made With Concord Grapes

If you want to skip the red wine, opt for a glass of 100 percent grape juice made from Concord grapes. These specific grapes deliver a number of the same benefits you’ll find in wine and help stimulate circulation.

It’s hard to find Concord grapes fresh in the supermarket, so drinking 100 percent grape juice derived from the fruit will offer the same heart-healthy benefits. Combine the juice with spritzer to create a new way to enjoy the beverage.

Improve your heart health by sipping on one of the beverages – all within moderation – reducing inflammation, improving circulation and helping prevent plaque buildup in arteries.
