Have a Healthier New Year

As Christmas decorations are carefully put away and we have the New Year in sight, the age-old tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions begins to creep into our consciousness.   Almost more revered for not being kept, we make resolutions as a fresh start to our journey through the next twelve months.  What better time to make a commitment to yourself and your health than the coming new year.   Here are some healthy resolutions that, with just a little determination, are easy to keep and will pay off in a big way.

  • Get Rid of Tobacco.  Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the US.  Quitting is a tough challenge to face but it is so much better than the risk of developing a number of cancers.  There are a number of resources to help you to this goal.  Quit.com,  Lung.org by the American Lung Association, SmokeFree.gov, QuitDay.org are just a few online resources that offer support, methods and advice.  A big motivator is to join with friends and family to work together toward a common goal of living smoke free and support each other.  You don’t have to do it alone.
  • Get Good Food.  Obesity and overweight together are the second leading cause of preventable death in the US.  This is the year to take charge and get healthy.  It seems any time we hear that we should eat healthier foods all we can think about is what we can’t have.  You don’t have to give up the foods you love to eat healthy.  It’s all about balance.   The key is only eating them once in a while.  Make it an adventure to try new fruits, grill some colorful vegetables, or grab a unique flavored yogurt to settle your sweet tooth.  Save the fatty, sugary foods for a special day.
  • Get Moving.  Simple things like taking the stairs instead of an elevator, parking at the back of the parking lot, and taking your dog for a walk all add up to help improve your overall health and fitness.  The more active you are the more your risk of developing chronic diseases is reduced.
  • Get More Sleep.  Studies have shown that irregular sleeping habits, eating before bedtime and lack of sleep are linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease..  Most people require 7 hours of rest per night to rejuvenate.  Try recording those late night shows you love and going to bed earlier.
  • Get Regular Check-ups.  Seeing a healthcare professional regularly is the best way to prevent illness and maintain good health.  Start your New Year with an appointment here at Careteam+.  We have a successful smoking cessation program and we can help you get your weight under control and we specialize in the treatment of chronic disease.   Our team will help you and your family start off the year with a healthcare evaluation and put you on a path to Live Well!

The biggest pay off to these New Year’s Resolutions is feeling better.  When you feel better your whole life feels better.  This is the time.  Make a decision today to have a healthier new year!
