November is National Diabetes Month

More than 29 million people in the United States (1 out of every 11) have Diabetes but only 1 in 4 know they have it. November is National Diabetes Month, a time when we educate our community about this disease and how to manage it as well as encourage those at risk to get tested. The sooner you know, the sooner you can begin to make healthy changes to improve your life today and in the years to come.

Diabetes Defined

The two common types of Diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1, often developing in youth, is a result of the body’s inability to produce enough insulin (a hormone produced in the pancreas) to regulate blood sugar levels. There is currently no prevention for Type 1 diabetes, yet with daily blood sugar testing and insulin injections the disease can be managed.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common, effects people of all ages but tends to develop in older adults who are overweight and physically inactive. Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes has become substantially more frequent in recent years, including young people, due to the increasing obesity rates in our country.

Ethnic groups that are at particularly high risk for Type 2 diabetes are African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and some Asian Americans.

Proper Care Now Will Prevent Complications Later

Careteam+ specializes in the care and treatment of chronic diseases like Diabetes. We will work with you to develop a healthy eating plan and a physical activity regimen as well as prescribing diabetes medication and providing education on how to test your blood sugar levels. Once these practices become a regular part of your day-to-day lifestyle your risk for developing additional health problems is diminished. With regular wellness visits, we can monitor your progress and make adjustments to your treatment if necessary.

Without a treatment plan, people with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes are at higher risk for serious health complications that include:

• Heart disease and stroke
• Blindness and eye problems
• Kidney disease
• Amputations as a result of blood vessel and nerve damage caused by diabetes, particularly in the feet and legs.

If you feel you are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes or are unsure, make an appointment to be tested today.
